The Transparent Factory in Dresden will be celebrating these days, on 11 December 2011, its tenth anniversary and with it the VW Phaeton, which is being built with great attention to detail. High time to one of the most impressive car of our time to look closer.
Sure, the VW Phaeton could build in one of his numerous other works. Or you could have a large, simple production facility outside the city walls can wring out of the ground, built to fit your needs, without having to take into consideration local conditions and to residents.
But in Wolfsburg, one has to be decided over ten years ago, for the Dresden city center, knowing what challenges a manufacturing base in the middle of the city brings. Because unlike, say, the BMW’s main plant in Munich-Freimann, around which the city has grown around, VW had to fit into a finished arrangement of houses, streets and parks.
Why Dresden?
So why Dresden? The search for a location to place the development of the car. The Phaeton, VW has achieved the highest level technically feasible and associated with a tasteful luxury. Thus a car can not in any finished work, the framework must be fit, and will be presented not only production, but also the manner in which the vehicle and eventually passed to the customer, must be right.
The decision for the region itself rests on objective reasoning. Here it plays the necessary infrastructure and the state of Saxony in the automotive production has always been a big part. Until the Second World War, Horch luxury vehicles and VW here by itself, long before the Glass Factory, manufacturing plants in Zwickau and Chemnitz.
