While BMW pondered over the decision of whether to go in for the twin-turbocharged engine for their next generation M5 Sedan, the team at Alpina beat them to the race and installed this engine on their new 2011 Alpina B5 Bi Turbo which is based on the 550i V-8 Sedan.
Alpina can very well boast of experience and great product. In all their time in the auto field which has been 35 years in the running now, they have given a series of Alpina models that have all had performance, comfort and the luxury of driving inherent in each of the model. They have, to be specific, developed five different 5 Series based Alpha models till now.
There latest addition has the 4.4 liter twin turbocharged V8 which was also found on their B7 Bi Turbo. The engine is capable of delivering 507 hp at 5,500 rpm and a torque of 516 pound-feet when it is running at 3,000 to 4,750 rpm. It also boasts of a 22mpg as its fuel consumption rate for the European combined cycle which is remarkable for a performance V-8.
The transmission mechanism is an eight speed automatic gear system which transmits power to the rear wheels. The transmission system has been manufactured by ZF. With this the car can go from 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds and maintain a top speed of 191 mph.
The brakes system is a high performance ventilated set and measures 14.7 inch at the front and 14.6 inch at the rear. The suspension set is also adjustable and the wheels are 20 inch alloy wrapped in Micelin Pilot Super Sport tires.
The other differences between an Alpine B5 Bi turbo and the standard BMW 5 Series is its full body kit and the double extended exhaust pipes while there are differences in the inner trim as well.
It was at the 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed held in UK that the Alpina B5-Turbo made its world debut. News about when the car would be launched is yet awaited.
