2011 Belgian Grand Prix: Sebastian Vettel Wins After Tyre Blister Problem

Sebastian Vettel won the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa today in his Red Bull-Renault, 3.7 seconds ahead of his team mate Mark Webber. Jenson Button charged up through the field to finish in third place in his McLaren-Mercedes, 9.6 seconds behind.

Vettel now extends his championship lead to 92 points over his team mate Webber. Red Bull-Renault continues to dominate the constructors’ championship, 131 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton was out early after coming together with Kamui Kobayashi while passing the Sauber, ending up in the barriers. The victory is Vettel’s 17 career win, and his seventh this year.

Despite the fact that rival teams refused to allow the Red Bulls to change their qualifying tyres due to blistering Sebastian Vettel managed to take the lead and win the race.

Pirelli had reacted to the situation by rushing spare tyres to the fabled circuit, but ultimately the likes of Ferrari and McLaren made Sebastian Vettel and the sister RB7 start on their damaged tyres.

“We had a lot of concerns,” Vettel said after extending his points lead to 92 points over his teammate Mark Webber. “We didn’t feel too comfortable and we both had to stop pretty early.”
The Red Bulls finished one-two ahead of McLaren’s Jenson Button.

“No wonder Ferrari and Mclaren objected to them wanting to change them (the tyres) before the race,” said BBC commentator Martin Brundle.
