The German manufacturer has revealed that its new small car range, starting with the B-Class, has been designed to be as future proof as possible. The brand plan is to release a dedicated ‘eco’ version, as well as offering four-wheel drive and a range of alternatively powered models after the initial launch.
The car’s chassis received some significant modifications. It doesn’t anymore have sandwich architecture, permitting the engineers to lower its center of gravity by up to 30 mm. The B-Class will be much sportier but it will still offer the same comforts. Beside this, the future models will be offered with a range of alternatively powered engines.
Beneath the passenger cell, the carmaker has put in a new “energy storing space”. This can be used to store batteries, natural gas tanks and fuel cells in the planned electric, hydrogen and hybrid variants, which are all due out in 2013/14. The new B-Class will be fitted with a multi-link rear suspension that’s meant to hold the four-wheel drive, 4matic models that would be offered on more powerful models also on AMG models.
Mercedes-Benz is considering that its alliance with Renault can be an opportunity to create a lineup of three cylinder engines so that it could have the most efficient range possible.
This new powerplant is a direct injection 1.6 litre turbo, and it will be offered in two versions that will deliver 123 hp or 154 hp. The carmaker focused on the torque that the engine will have at the lowest revs. This is why peak shove is able to attain an incredibly low 1,250 rpm.
