2014 BMW i5 already planned – report

A senior source within BMW has told an auto magazine that the Bavarian marque is already analyzing the prospects of launching an i5 model.

If launches, the model would be the third member in the recently introduced “i” family after the i3 and i8 and it could be called an i5 model which will either be a sedan or a crossover. However the car hasn’t been approved for production yet and its body style is yet to be decided but we expect that since it belongs to the “i” family, it should be true to its principles that include a rear-wheel drive layout and the use of CFRP and carbon fiber in its body.

Once a final decision is taken regarding this possible i5 and if it’s given a go ahead, BMW will need to also decide whether it will be a fully electric car, a range-extending model or a plug-in hybrid. The same source further mentioned that the best solution and option for this model could be the plug-in hybrid version which although would provide a longer range than the existing i3, but the car would still be aimed at those doing mostly driving within the city for short distances.
