Auto sales in China increased 3.8 percent in 2021

China’s auto sales in 2021 increased 3.8 percent year on year to 26.28 million units, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).

Sales of passenger vehicles in last year increased 6.5 percent year on year to 21.48 million units.

In December 2021, auto sales totaled 2.79 million units, a decline of 1.6 percent year on year, according to the CAAM.

December’s passenger vehicle sales boosted 2 percent year on year to over 2.42 million units.

Sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) saw a positive performance last year, increasing approximately 160 percent to 3.52 million units, according to the CAAM.

In December alone, NEV sales were at 531,000 units, increasing about 110 percent from the same period in 2020.

In 2021, China saw a number of domestic and foreign auto companies reduce auto production in the country due to a chip shortage crisis.
