Downsizing in the upper class: As a more economical alternative to the twelve-cylinder version, Bentley Continental Coupe and Convertible now with eight-cylinder engine. Thanks to cylinder deactivation and a new automatic transmission, the two luxury four-wheel drive so 40 percent less fuel than previously required.
The 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine makes 507 hp and delivers a maximum torque of 660 Newton meters. He maintains the proper respect for the distance so far only offered 6.0-liter gasoline engine with 575 hp W12.
In terms of performance must therefore be made easy compromise. The top speed is slightly less than 300 km / h, well below the 318er brand of twelve-cylinder engine that accelerates from zero to 100 km / h not in 4.6, but in about five seconds.
The consumption, however, the differences become more evident. Only ten to eleven liters of fuel per 100 kilometers ride to be necessary, Bentley called exact numbers but only when the official premiere at the Detroit Auto Show (9 to 22 January 2012). The twelve-cylinder version is at least significantly thirstier and requires an average of 16.5 liters.
Audi engine:
The new engine is no self-development, but comes off the shelf from parent company VW. It is used with a bit more power (520 hp) already in the luxury saloon Audi S8. Can be found there, the fuel-saving technologies, which make the Bentley models such comparatively economical. Above all, the cylinder deactivation to reduce consumption.
In low-power requirements, such as steady highway speed or in city traffic, four of the eight cylinders are deactivated. The driver is noticed by the displacement-halving nothing. Further savings potential is to have eight-speed automatic transmission and brake energy recovery.
