BMW 5-Series GT: Something wrong with the fuel gauge – a recall possible

So! You own your beloved BMW 5-Series GT and have travelled several hundreds of miles since you last filled up. If you haven’t noticed and if you are still under impression that the fuel gauge needle is not moving from ‘Full’ position, then it is not that you have become an expert in eco-driving skills nor is it that the sports car has extreme fuel efficiency.

Well, the car’s fuel gauge is known to have some problem especially in certain 2010 and 2011 model year BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo fastbacks. These models were manufactured between January 12 and July 1, 2010. More than 6,000 owners of are being cautioned by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about the same.

The 5-Series Gran Turismo’s fuel level sensor within the fuel tank can become wedged against the tank, as reported in a release on NHTSA’s website in interest of public safety. The wedging of fuel level sensor inside the fuel tank results in the fuel gauge, in the instrument cluster exhibiting a wrong status about the amount of fuel in the tank.

In the meantime, there is no news from the German automaker providing any details on the fix. Neither a notification schedule on the recall seems to have come from the company. The affected owners of the super sports sedan models may want to contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417.
