BMW has officially announced its plans to unveil the i8 at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show in September in Germany.
Expected to be shown alongside the i3, the company claims that the i8 is a contemporary plug-in hybrid sports car that combines impressive performance with the fuel consumption of a small car.
The company did not provide detailed specifications but the model is expected to come fitted with a tubocharged three-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor that would generate 170 HP (125 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. This setup could enable the i8 to achieve 0-100 kmph (0-62 mph) in under five seconds. In terms of fuel economy and consumption, the model has been promised to consume less than 3 L/100km (78.4 mpg US / 94.1 mpg UK) and travel up to 35 km (20 miles) on electricity alone.
BMW will also use the Frankfurt Motor Show to introduce various new models such as the 4-Series Coupe, the X5 and the Active Tourer Outdoor concept. In fact the visitors will also be able to test drive a handful of models on an infinity-shaped track that is nearly 300 meters (984 feet) long and spans three levels.
