Since the McLaren 570S introduced in coupe type two years earlier, we have been expecting a drop-top variation. In fact, we’re a little shocked we have not even seen the 570S Spider yet, however it’s coming soon. Talking with Autocar, McLaren Automotive CEO Mike Flewitt validated that the 570S Spider will arrive this year.
Flewitt rejected to verify any additional details on the 570S Spider besides that it will have a folding metal roof, simply the 650S Spider. McLaren won’t do a convertible variation of the 540C– a lower-powered version of the 570S Coupe that’s not offered in the US– because it would be too costly.
“With the 540C, by the time you include options it can cost the same as a 570S, which is why we just use it in specific markets,” Flewitt informed. “And because of that it doesn’t make sense to do a 540C Spider. There will never be a 540GT either,” he stated, describing the somewhat more spacious fastback member of the 570 family.
When a car manufacturer turns a coupe into a convertible, we naturally start to worry about included weight and decreased rigidness. Although that’s not a problem for McLaren, since its vehicles are developed around a light-weight carbon fiber tub-getting rid of the roofing in such a vehicle has practically no influence on rigidity.
In McLaren’s case, the only added weight is from the folding roofing mechanism. The 650S Spider is just around 90 pounds much heavier than the coupe it’s based on. With similar weight gains, the 570S Spider would possibly tip the scales at less than 3300 pounds, making it one of the lightest convertibles in its class.
We’ll discover the McLaren 570S Spider’s full specifications when it debuts later on this year.
