McLaren Automotive is building a new factory for the recently introduced MP4-12C.
According Autocar, part of the layout for the new factory has been dedicated to “RHT Sub Assembly”. For those of who don’t know, RHT stands for retractable hard top.
As such roof mechanism always adds weight it is very likely that McLaren will use carbon fiber for the folding roof, to keep the extra weight down compared to the hard top version.
First deliveries of the hard top MP4-12C should begin in spring 2011. Spyder version should follow soon after if McLaren can successfully get the new factory running.
McLaren plans to produce over 4,000 cars a year once the new factory is ready and running. If the new factory is not ready in time, there is a plan to use the current factory where McLaren used to build the Mercedes-Benz SLS McLaren.
The McLaren MP4-12C Spyder will be powered by the same 3.8-liter twin turbo making about 600 horsepower as the hard top version.
