Opel is working on a new vehicle model that will be known as the Astra K for the 2016 model year. The car seems to be in the final phase of factory testing and it has been caught on camera. The car has been spotted ahead of its official unveiling, which is most likely to take place within a couple of months.
Unlike before, this time, the spy images of the car are quite revealing. There is no more plastic disguise with a bulky size covering either the front or rear fascia of the vehicle. Instead, there is now nothing but a thin camouflage layer covering the car. As a result, everyone can now have a better look at Opel’s upcoming 5-door compact hatchback model.
Judging by these new spy images of the next generation Astra K from Opel, it seems that the car will be quite as big as its older brother, yet with a sharper and sleeker design. In addition to that, the car is seemingly going to sport LED lighting clusters as well. Furthermore, the character line of the car looks prominent, going from the rear wings of the car all the way to the door handles and the wheel arches at the front end of the car. The car seems to be sitting on newly designed alloy wheels. It also seems to have a spoiler mounted on its roof.
It is reported that this new Astra model will be making use of the D2XX chassis, a chassis that is also used on the China-spec Chevrolet Cruze which was introduced only recently. Then, beneath its engine compartment, the car will most likely be backed by a turbocharged 1.6L 4-cylinder engine that delivers 280 bhp of total power output.
Unfortunately, when it comes to the 3-door GTC coupe variant of the model, customers will no longer have the chance to buy the car as Opel has reportedly axed it. Yet, both the sedan and the wagon variants remain available for purchase. An OPC derivative is also in the works and Opel claims it should have been out by the year 2017.
