After the unveiling of the new 1-Series, the other car from BMW slated for a replacement of the 3-Series sedan has been spotted undergoing tests. The fresh spy shots of the new 3-Series has less of the swirly decals while the fake front and rear end has been done away with to give us a better idea of what the new 3-Series will look like.
As far as the exterior design of the 3-Series is concerned, there isn’t anything radical with the new 3-Series sedan and it has remained so ever since E36 was introduced way back in 1990. So the styling of the F30 can be considered an evolution of the current E90 3-Series with some styling cues borrowed from the 5-series as well. These include the stronger belt-line combined with a lower and more aggressive front end with larger double kidneys. Even the interior would be on similar lies as that of the 3-Series interior.
For engine the 3-Series would be fitted with the turbocharged gasoline engines. The 2012 1-series hatchback with its 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline with direct-injection delivering 136HP and 170HP was the first indication of what the engine was going to be on the new 3-Series cars. This engine is going to be fitted on the 316i and 318i to be sold in some select markets.
The newly developed 2.0 liter turbocharged four cylinder gasoline engine by BMW would also find a place in the 3-Series. Fitted on the X1 model this engine delivered 240 hp. Then there also are the latest iteration of the firm’s force-fed straight-six that too will form part of the engine line-up for the 3-Series.
The initial lineup will also consist of an extensive range of turbocharged four cylinder and six cylinder diesel power plants with hybrid versions coming along at a later stage.
Confirmation about the new 3-series being unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show scheduled in the near future is awaited.
Once BMW launches the 3-Series, they would be enhancing the 3-Series range with a Coupe, Convertible, Touring (station-wagon) and for the first time, a Gran Turismo model to compete with Audi’s A5 Sportback.
