Paul Brown claimed a flag-to-flag win in the GTS class of this weekend’s Pirelli World Challenge Race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with the No. 50 Ford Mustang Boss 302S. Brown managed to keep first place all the way to the finish with a 2.713-second margin of victory, after a pulled away start.
His first career World Challenge title with one race still to go in the season was secured by the win. The victory was Brown’s fifth of the year and his eighth podium finish out of eleven races so far this year.
“I started it just like every other and went as hard and as fast as I could at the start,” I watched the guys moving around at the back. Luckily, or unluckily, there was a GT car that stalled and really screwed up the one line. I just put my head down and worked my butt off.” said the winner.
This is Brown’s first Championship, who wasn’t even sure if there was funding at the start of the season to run for a championship. Race-to-race deals were placed together by the team to make it to every championship round and now to sit on top with a one-race cushion to spare. “I don’t know how to explain it, it’s really surreal,” Brown said. “I’m just shocked.”
Pratt Cole’s No. 96 USA Cares/Western Metal Ford Mustang FR500 ran second after Brown the entire race, while Ben Crosland (No. 25 RacewithRP.com Ford Mustang FR500S) and Eric Foss (No. 73 Traxxas/St. Jude Hospital/SPX Ford Mustang FR500S) were third, but mechanical problems didn’t allow them to keep their position, finishing seventh and sixth. On the fifth place was Brad Adams (No. 75 RaceWithRP.com Ford Mustang FR500S).
