Karl Schlicht, the person in charge of product planning and the vice president of the European division of the Japanese automaker Toyota, has officially announced to the world some preliminary details regarding an upcoming sports car model from the company. This is not just another sports car model from Toyota. No, it is a model that is jointly developed by the Japanese marquee and the luxury automaker from Germany, BMW.
In case you forget, both BMW and Toyota started collaboration on a sports car model back in January 2013. Needless to say, this is and will always be very interesting. As such, it is only natural to see a number of rumors surfacing when it comes to this jointly developed sports car model in particular. However, rumors are rumors and they are very often not proven. Now, nonetheless, we have already received official words, at least from one of the two automotive marquees mentioned earlier, if not from both the marquees. As reported by Autocar, quoting Shclicht, during the 2015 Geneva Motor Show event, the upcoming sports car model will even be more powerful when compared to the GT86 model. Speaking of the latter, it is a model jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru, both of which come from the Japanese soil.
Taking into account the fact that the upcoming sports car will slot above the Toyota GT86, it is actually quite likely that the car will bear the Supra moniker, which was once a very iconic moniker in the world of automobiles. Yet, Schlicht mentions that the upcoming model will have its very own mission.
In case you wonder, the Japanese automaker has actually provided a sneak preview of the upcoming sports car model already by launching the FT-1 concept car. Sure, this vehicle comes with a jaw dropping visual styling. Yet, behind its highly attractive design, the car has been gifted with the carbon fiber construction from BMW. It is also believed that the car will be packing a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine under its hood, combined with electric motors which harness the energy provided by some super capacitors of sorts.
The Toyota variant of the jointly developed sports car model will expectedly make its debut in the oncoming year of 2017. Unfortunately, to drive the car home, buyers may have to pay a slightly more expensive amount of money than they would a Chevrolet Corvette. The latter can be taken home with $55,000 for the 2015 coupe model.
