Two were killed and four were critically injured following a vehicle crash on Highway 101 on the Gaviota Coast, California on Thursday morning.
The crash involved six vehicles.
According to California Highway Patrol (CHP), a Ford Expedition was driving northbound on Highway 101 and lost control, before moving across the lanes and into southbound traffic lanes.
The driver for the Expedition has been identified as a 29-year-old Santa Maria man, who crossed from the right-hand lane into the left-hand lane of northbound traffic and crashed with the right front side of a Ford F-450. The Expedition kept moving left, for reasons not known yet and was propelled into the air as it got into the southbound lanes.
After that, Expedition collided with a Dodge Grand Caravan and a Honda Accord driving in the left-hand southbound lane.
Two more vehicles got involved in the crash. The Chevrolet Bolt crashed with the Expedition while the Toyota Tundra truck was damaged by debris from the crash.
Two passengers in the Expedition were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver and two other passengers in the vehicle were taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, two with major injuries and one person with mild injuries.
The driver of the Dodge Caravan was also taken to the hospital with major injuries.
Three occupants of the Honda Accord had minor injuries.
Southbound lanes were closed near El Capitán State Beach for multiple hours. They were resumed around 1 p.m.
