The Volkswagen Group is on the brink of speeding up its green automobile offensive. The Wolfsburg-based giant has revealed that its brands will offer around one million electrical and electrified vehicles each year by the year 2025.
The shift to electrified cars is primarily driven by the rigid emissions regulations that are arranged to come into effect in coming years, as per Automotive News. The automaker describes it will reach its ambitious goal by introducing no less than 20 battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models by the year 2020. That figure consists of brand brand-new designs, and upgraded variations of existing cars.
The offensive will kick off later on this year when Volkswagen introduces an upgraded variation of the e-Golf fitted with a new, larger battery pack. The drivetrain is still being fine-tuned, however engineers anticipate that the electric compact will be able to drive for as much as 125 miles on a single charge, a generous enhancement over the 90 miles accomplished by the existing model.
The e-Golf will be signed up with by a variety of added battery-electric designs prior to completion of the decade. Volkswagen remains in the early stages of establishing a modular platform much like its MQB architecture designed specifically to underpin electric automobiles. Called MEB internally, the platform was previewed previously this year by the Budd-e concept that was introduced at the CES program in Las Vegas.
Interestingly, another among Volkswagen’s upcoming green automobiles will supposedly take the kind of a compact hatchback powered by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. Tentatively named XL3, the gasoline-electric model will be intended squarely at the Toyota Prius and the just recently presented Hyundai Ioniq.
