It is still about a year before the production debut of the next generation Audi A6 but information with regard to its platform and construction are creating a buzz over the internet. The 2012 A6 is expected to implore the ASFII lightweight spaceframe technology developed for the TT platform.
The ASF II or the Aluminum and Steel Spaceframe is designed to provide a base which will cut the weight of the platform into half but it will be about 150% as rigid. ASF technology makes use of bonded subframe, tail, and nose structures to form the chassis. The passenger cell will be primarily made of aluminum and steel plus some foam reinforcements.
First used on the TT, the ASF will be the standard architecture that will be used for the future lineups of Audi. The A6 will be the first to use the next gen technology. A variation of the architecture is used for the A8 but the construction of the big sedan utilizes mostly aluminum.
A range of engines is expected for the Audi A6. There will be a 2.8L V6 which will have an output of 190 horsepower with the top of the line being a V8 4.2L that gives out 350 horsepower. The current S6 that has a V10 will be have a new engine that will be smaller and using forced-induction unit technology. There will also be a 185 horsepower V6 2.7L diesel engine and a more potent 238 hp diesel engine with a 3.0L displacement.
The front wheel drive configuration will still be the standard configuration but there will be an option to get an AWD quattro variant. The styling will most likely follow the lines of the new A5 and the design of the A8.
We can expect the new Audi A6 2012 model to be unveiled on the early parts of 2011.

The A6 is already a loved car, but people prefer buying an A7 or A8 rather than stucking on the A6. May be this change could help the A6 for more sales and picks.
