BMW Officially Planning Full Hybrids of 3- and 5- Series

by Ron Grant

Norbert Reithofer, the chief executive of BMW, just announced that the German car manufacturer will be offering a full-hybrid version of the 5-series. The good news doesn’t end there, though, as they’re also considering the production of smaller 3-series hybrids as well.

This move is apparently because the company wishes to reduce its fleet carbon emissions by 25% from 2008 to 2020. BMW’s fleet emissions already dropped to 150g this year compared to 2008’s 156g.

The 5-series hybrid was showcased in the Geneva Motor Show through the Geneva ActiveHybrid Concept. The car is going to be the second full hybrid produced by BMW. The first one was ActiveHybrid X6 which runs on electric zero-emission propulsion alone. Reithofer also said that these hybrid productions were necessary. After all, if you don’t have any hybrids to show in your company’s portfolio, you’ll soon be booted out of the market.
