BYD has a new flagship SUV in town, and is called the Great Tang. The name may sound unusual at first, but the vehicle underneath is meant to sit at the top of the brand’s range, built on the company’s latest electric platform and aimed at high-end rivals including the Zeekr 9X and IM LS9, as well as more familiar names, such as the Volvo EX90 and Hyundai Ioniq 9.
First previewed by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology earlier this year and now revealed in full, the Great Tang is a very large machine, measuring 208.7 inches long, 78,7 inches wide, and 70.8 inches tall. The wheelbase also stretches to 123,2 inches. BYD says it is even bigger than the Denza B8, and it also becomes part of the brand’s new premium Dynasty series.

Visually, the BYD’s new Great Tang SUV is available in a two-tone red-and-silver paint job. The design cues are familiar to all new models from BYD; however, this model does stand out with a flowing light bar up front, along with a black lower grille and vertical headlamps integrated into the front fascia.
This is the first BYD model to use the company’s second-generation Blade battery, and it rides on the new Super e platform with 1000-volt technology. According to BYD, the battery can charge from 10 percent to 97 percent in just nine minutes, assuming it is connected to one of the firm’s new 1,500 kW charging stations. That figure is the one that will draw most of the attention here, and probably for good reason.
Stepping inside, the cabin comes with a 2+2+3 seating arrangement and is fitted with the latest technologies BYD can integrate in. A central giant infotainment screen also dominates the driver location, and dedicated screens are also used by the front passengers. It also has a fold-down screen fitted into the ceiling that is assigned to the rear passengers.

In terms of powertrain, the buyers will be allowed to select a one-motor or a dual-motor design. The former has either 402 horsepower or 496 horsepower (this depends on the version), and the latter is offered with 784 horsepower. Nevertheless, the size of the battery pack is not mentioned.
Range, though, may matter more in something this large. BYD declared that the single rear-motor version delivers up to 950 km of range, while the dual-motor model is capable of around 850 km of range, and that despite weighing as much as 6,547 lbs, or the equivalent of 2,970 kg. Lower, yes, though not by much, considering the output increase.
As for prices, the new BYD Great Tang is expected to cost at least 400,000 yuan, which is roughly $58,000. The higher-end variant could go up to at least $65,000.
