The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office stated a car thief was shot and critically injured by a father after his car, which had his 6-year-old son inside, was stolen early Saturday morning.
Detectives stated a father was saying goodbye to his friends at a home situated in the 3200 block of Roberts Ln. at 2:35 a.m.
While he was stated goodbye, his 2012 Honda was parked and running with his 6-year-old son inside the car.
At that time, the suspect, Lamar Thurman, found access to the car and took off with the child inside.
PBSO stated the father and friends chased after the vehicle right away while calling 911.
Officials stated Thurman later struck the Honda in front of 10 Loquat Tree Dr. in unincorporated Lantana.
PBSO stated as the father and friends exited their vehicle to approach and recover the child from the stolen car, Thurman was able to free the car from where it was temporarily stuck and started to drive east on Loquat Tree Drive.
The dad, with a handgun, shot at Thurman in an attempt to stop him from departing further with his child in the vehicle. The suspect was struck several times and crashed 200 yards down the street, PBSO stated.
The child was not hurt. Thurman was transported to a regional hospital and is critical condition.
PBSO stated Thurman has no association with the victims. Detectives are still investigating the incident.
State records reveal Thurman was released from prison in February for carjacking an elderly person in Broward County, back in May 2016.
