Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV stated on Tuesday it will slash almost 1,400 jobs at an Illinois assembly plant where it constructs the Jeep Cherokee sport utility vehicle.
The Italian-American automaker will remove one of three shifts at the Belvidere Assembly plant beginning May 6, affecting 1,371 jobs, in order to “better align production” with worldwide demand, a spokeswoman stated.
Previously on Tuesday, Fiat Chrysler announced it was spending $4.5 billion in five plants and creating 6,500 jobs in Michigan, including construction of a new assembly plant in Detroit.
