Volvo started production of its second-generation XC60 last week in Torslanda, Sweden. The midsize crossover has gone into worldwide markets and is expected to go on sale in the U.S. later this year.
The very first 2018 Volvo XC60 to roll off the line was a Crystal White-painted T5 Inscription AWD, which includes a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine creating 250 hp. Purchasers can also select between two other engines for the XC60: a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter with 316 hp or a plug-in hybrid that creates 400 hp. Diesel models will likewise be offered in some markets.
“This is a proud day for everybody at the plant,” stated Magnus Nilsson, vice president of the Torslanda plant, in a new press release. “We have worked hard in recent weeks and months to prepare Torslanda for this newest Volvo design, and now we are ready to start delivering brand-new XC60s to consumers.”
The brand-new model replaces the previous XC60, which is nearly a decade old. Throughout its run, nearly a million units were sold globally. The crossover represent about 30 percent of Volvo’s overall sales.
In the future, Volvo might produce the XC60 at its new South Carolina plant. The plant is currently set to produce the related S60 sedan, and making crossovers in the U.S. could be beneficial given the appeal of the body style.
