Japanese automakers see sales decline in China during October

Japanese automakers Honda, Nissan, and Toyota saw their sales decline again in China in October as chip shortage continues to hit production in the country.

Honda sold 148,377 vehicles in China last month, declining 18% from a year earlier.

Nissan sold 113,876 cars, showing a decline of 22%.

Toyota sold 142,000 cars, down by 19%.

The chip shortage, which has hit automakers worldwide, emerges from a confluence of factors as automakers, which closed plants for two months during the coronavirus pandemic last year, rival against the sprawling consumer electronics industry for chip supplies. A factory fire suffered by Japanese chipmaker Renesas this year is also cited as a reason behind the chip shortage.
