Next-gen MINI Cooper may get 3-cylinder engine

MotoringFile recently reported that the new MINI Cooper might get the same 3-cylinder engine that BMW has been working on for the 1-Series.

MINI engineers believe that giving the car a smaller powerplant will allow it to keep its performance figures while improving its fuel efficiency. If indeed the Mini Cooper will have this engine, the car will output a decent 122 horsepower while the Cooper S will give out around 189 hp. Having a 3-cylinder engine, direct injection, and an efficient turbo in the equation the Mini Cooper might be able to achieve around 50 mpg while cruising on the highway for its US form.

Aside from the better fuel mileage we can also expect the carbon dioxide emission to go down from the current levels. We do not have word yet if the engineers trimmed down some weight off the Mini Cooper but we can expect similar figures or even lower compared to the current version.

We can expect more updates from the car manufacturer in the next few weeks or months.
