The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated Tuesday that new testing is leading Takata Corp to declare 2.7 million air bag inflators faulty in Ford Motor, Nissan Motor and Mazda Motor automobiles.
Takata air bag inflators are currently associated with 17 deaths and over 180 injuries worldwide, and the recalls will ultimately cover about 125 million inflators. The automobile safety company stated new testing is prompting the recall of some driver-side air bags developed from 2015 through 2012.
Nissan stated it is going to recall 627,000 Versa cars from 2007-2012 model years, 515,000 of them in the United States “out of an abundance of caution.” It will inform owners under 60 days with extra instructions.
Ford spokesperson John Cangany stated the issue covers an estimated of 2.2 million Ford vehicles, and the company has 5 days to reply to the Takata filing. The automaker is “familiar with Takata’s submission, and we have been in regular touch with the agency on the issue. Importantly, we aren’t familiar with any incidents, and test data does not recommend any problems,” he said.
Mazda stated the new recall effects only 6,000 B-series trucks.
Over 65 percent of 46.2 million formerly recalled Takata air bag inflators in the United States have not been fixed.
