Sales of passenger vehicles in India increased by 45 percent to 264,442 units in July compared to 182,779 units in the same month last year, the country’s auto-industry body Society Indian Automotive Manufacturers (SIAM) said.

The overall production of passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers, and quadricycle in July was 2,099,035 units, according to the data provided by SIAM.

Apart from passenger vehicles, domestic sales of three-wheelers were 17,888 units and two-wheeler sales reached 1,253,937 units in July.

Regarding the vehicles sales data, SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon said the country’s automotive industry was treading a cautious path given the possibilities of the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Indian Automobile Industry continues to face heavy headwinds in the form of global semi-conductor shortage and steep rise in commodity prices. On one hand, the industry is managing such supply chain challenges while ensuring the safety of its people, and on the other hand, the industry is also keeping a close eye on the onset of a 3rd wave in India and across the world,” said Menon.
