It would be awesome to get behind the wheel of your car and have to do nothing or almost nothing. It would be great to have self-driving cars take over and drive through the endless traffic and even be able to busy yourself when you’re stuck in lanes until things get moving. That’s the promise of self-driving cars, isn’t it?
Unfortunately for everyone, true self-driving cars still remain a dream, and will likely stay that way for some time. While the technology, in theory, exists to make this happen, there would have to be changes on nearly every level of the way we transport each other around in order to bring them into reality.
For starters, the way cars drive on the roads is controlled by individual states; even though highways connect us all, the change would have to be allowed by them. What else is in the way? This graphic offers some insights.
