It looks like the 2018 Ford Mustang GT wishes to raise a little hell on the track. Ford declares the new Mustang GT can strike 60 mph under 4 seconds in Drag Strip mode.

A Porsche 911 Carrera loads a twin turbocharged flat-six rear engine that provides 370 horse power and 331 lb-ft of torque. It’ll run from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. A Carrera 4S will get you there in just 4 seconds.

The revamped 5.0-liter V-8 of the 2018 Mustang GT creates 460 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. The extra power and torque join the faster, smoother shifting 10-speed SelectShift automatic and a set of custom-made Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires to finish the 911-beating package.

“Generally, when you shift gears, you give up,” stated Mustang primary engineer Carl Widmann. “In Drag Strip mode, the engine torque does not drop when you’re moving. You get peak engine torque and horse power straight through thanks to our brand-new Ford-built 10-speed transmission.”

Ford’s upgraded 5.0-liter V-8 includes a dual-fuel, high-pressure direct injection, and low-pressure port fuel injection innovation for increased power and performance.

The engine provides 25 extra ponies and an extra 20 lb-ft of torque over in 2016’s version. Ford also declares it provides more low-end torque, high-rpm power, and improved fuel performance.

Drag Strip mode has actually been developed to offer optimal acceleration and performance for straight-line driving and is among 5 driver-selectable modes offered for 2018. Normal, Sport, Track, and Snow/Wet are other modes on tap.

“Gearing matters, and in Drag Strip mode this vehicle launches better than ever off the line,” Widmann added.

Knowing the EcoBoost-equipped Mustang gets an increase in power on the strip. A retuned EcoBoost four-cylinder now provides 310 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, which is a 30 lb-ft gain advantage the 2017 model. Ford says the 2018 version in Drag Strip mode with Performance Package, and the 10-speed automated, can top 0-60 miles per hour under 5 seconds.

The 2018 Mustang is available at dealerships in the fall.
