BMW’s Alpina Plan Targets a New Tier of Ultra-Luxury Buyers

BMW appears ready to reshape the upper end of its portfolio with Alpina positioned as something far more exclusive than before. The German group spent years leaving a noticeable pricing gap between its own flagship models and the entry point into Rolls-Royce ownership, especially once fully-loaded 7 Series sedans and XM Label models started creeping upward in price.

According to the source material, the distance between those BMWs and a Rolls-Royce Ghost sits around $100,000. Other brands already profit heavily inside that territory. Bentley, Aston Martin, Mercedes-Maybach, and AMG all operate there, selling cars focused less on outright performance and more on exclusivity, craftsmanship, and long-distance luxury.

BMW purchased Alpina and its intellectual property in March 2022. The relaunch as a standalone luxury marque begins in 2026. Before the acquisition, Alpina had operated as a small family-owned business for decades, modifying factory BMWs into softer, faster grand-tourers with upgraded interiors, revised suspensions, and their own identity. Some even introduced “Comfort Plus” suspension settings years ago.

The Vision BMW Alpina concept already hinted at where things are heading. BMW revealed the car during the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este at Lake Como, one of the automotive calendar’s best-known events. Beneath the concept sits an interesting clue. The BMW 8 Series recently disappeared without a direct successor, while the Vision BMW Alpina concept carries proportions close to a large two-door grand-tourer.

BMW confirmed part of the future roadmap already. The first production Alpina arrives during the second half of 2027, priced above $200,000, and based on the 7 Series platform. Joachim Post, BMW Group’s head of research and development, reportedly indicated future Alpina products start from larger vehicles such as a grand-tourer and an SUV related to the 7 Series and X7.

SUVs matter here. Large luxury crossovers continue dominating premium sales on both sides of the Atlantic, so BMW Alpina appears headed toward an X7-sized model as well. Smaller volume products tied to the 3 Series or X3 reportedly stay outside the strategy in order to preserve a more exclusive image.

Electric propulsion entered the discussion too. The article points toward EV torque delivery matching the traditional Alpina formula surprisingly well. Old Alpinas focused on effortless speed, refinement, and comfort instead of raw aggression associated with BMW M products.

BMW seems determined to preserve those traits. Hand-assembled engines, signature 20-spoke wheels, premium materials, and a calmer grand-touring character remain central to the formula, even while the brand moves further into Bentley Continental GT and Flying Spur territory.
