All new Jaguar Land Rover cars will be offered in an electric or hybrid variation from 2020, Britain’s most significant automaker stated on Thursday, as it accelerates plans to electrify its models.
In 2016, the company, owned by India’s Tata Motors, stated it would offer greener versions of 50% of its new line-up by 2020, but it has now increased its plans.
Demand for electric models continues to increase greatly and in July Britain said it would prohibit the sale of new gas and diesel vehicles from 2040 to cut pollution, reproducing strategies by France and cities such as Madrid, Mexico City and Athens.
The boss of the automaker said that Britain needs to do more to be prepared for the mass uptake of electric vehicles.
JLR will offer an electric or hybrid choice for all its new vehicles from 2020 but Ralf Speth said that facilities needed to be enhanced.
“Dates are set by the UK government for the banning of diesel and petrol vehicles by 2040,” Speth stated.
“Where is the network of charging points that we will be needed? Indeed where is the power and the grid?”
