It is known Lamborghini will use a plug-in hybrid powertrain on the Urus SUV, and now it appears a lot more unlikely candidate will also get the technology. The successor to the present Lamborghini Huracan will be a plug-in hybrid when it shows up in 2022.

Lamborghini boss Stefano Domenicali informed the Autocar: “The [next] Huracan– that car will require hybridization. Hybridization is the response, not [complete] electric.”

Regardless of its hybrid aspirations, Lamborghini will continue to use big gas engines. “There is still a great deal of capacity for the V-12,” stated Domenicali. “The right method for us is to have the V-10 and V-12 to fit our customers and after that be ready to switch [to a hybrid] at the ideal moment.”

Two years back, the Lamborghini R&D chief Maurizio Reggiani, had talked about issues when it came to putting hybrid technology in supercars. “Hybrid for me truly is still far, because weight is the most crucial [physical] input we can have in a car, and if we add a hybrid the weight of the battery and the package is truly unbelievable,” he stated at the time. He informed the Urus makes a good first model to check out its hybrid technology since weight isn’t as big of a concern with SUVs.

The Lamborghini Huracan successor will embrace next-generation battery technology that ought to help keep weight down. And it’s not simply exploring hybrids for the short-term; Lamborghini is obviously investing heavily in the R&D of future powertrain innovation even beyond 2022. It started work last year with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on a project for future supercars, which will likely concentrate on light-weight materials and battery storage options.
