General Motors has announced a guarantee of 100,000 miles or a time period of eight years whichever comes first for the life of their battery. This is specifically aimed at easing consumers concerns about battery life and hold good for their upcoming Chevrolet Volt cars which would be fitted with lithium ion battery.

They have also accepted that the warranty would transfer to the new owner should the original owner of the car decide to sell the Volt to a new person. The statement from GM says “it’s the automotive industry’s longest, most comprehensive battery warranty for an electric vehicle”.

All the 161 parts that the battery comprises of are covered under the warranty clause. There is however the fact that the battery which weighs 400 pound itself costs in the range of $8,000 to $10,000.

The car is equipped with a gasoline engine as well. This is used to recharge the car when the battery is completely depleted of charge. The price tag for the car is $40,000 and expected to be available at showrooms in the US this fall.
