Land Rover released the first pictures of the precursor to a new Defender – DC100 concept car. This concept is set for the upcoming 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show debut.
Although in the release accompanying these photos, the manufacturer says there’s been no plan to market a version of the new off-roader in North America, the SUV maker indicates a new Defender is on the way, set for launching by 2015, according to the release.
Gerry McGovern, director of design for Land Rover, said,
“Replacing the iconic Defender is one of the biggest challenges in the automotive design world; it is a car that inspires people worldwide. The DC100 isn’t a production-ready concept, but the beginning of a four-year journey to design a relevant Defender for the 21st century.”
From this we can understand that Land Rover plans to gauge the level of interest in the design of the DC100, be that positive or negative reactions, and make the necessary changes or perhaps even change the styling direction if it fails to ignite some passion.
Land Rover’s global brand director also said,
“We are determined the new Defender will be true to its heritage, while meeting the requirements of an all-new global market. We plan to engage with existing and potential customers to help us finalise the details of the new vehicle.”
According to the car maker, the Land Rover DC100 concept builds upon the essential elements of the car’s character and allows Land Rover to open the debate and inspire people to dream about the Defenders of the future. No details on the concept’s running gear were released, but are set to be announced during the Land Rover press conference in Frankfurt on September 13, 2011 at 09:15 hrs (CET).
