Released in 1992, the McLaren F1 is a legendary car, that although it turned 20 this year, it still is at the top of the classification of the super-cars.
For a long time, the McLaren F1 was the fastest car in the world, and even today it’s difficult to beat, reaching 60 in 3.2 seconds, and a top speed of 240mph. This is possible thanks to the light weight of the car, and the amazing power that the light engine provides.
The first thing one notices about this supercar is the unconventional placement of the seats: the driver’s seat is in the center, while two passenger seats are in the back. This allows a better view for the driver.
In order to keep the car weight down, McLaren had to use special materials such as carbon fibre, Kevlar, titanium, and gold foil to keep the engine from overheating.
The BMW-designed 6.0L V12 engine that weighs only 266 kilograms is able to provide 627 horsepower, which makes for an incredible power to ratio weight of 550 horsepower per ton.
Getting its inspiration from the Honda NSX, McLaren has improved the ride quality by creating the perfect balance between handling and comfort, usability and performance. The F1 also does great in safety tests, allowing the driver to leave the crash safe and sound.
The transmission is manual and works in 6 speeds.
The F1 has been one of the best cars in the world for a long time. Today, there are better and faster cars on the market, but the McLaren F1 will always be a supercar full of personality, and makes a pleasure to drive.
