Reports have emerged claiming Volkswagen is working on a successor for the highly acclaimed VR6 engine.
As per the report, Fritz Eichler who is Volkswagen’s new head of engine development has been given the task of supervising the work on the all new narrow-angle V6 direct injection gasoline engine. Before joining at Volkswagen, Eichler has worked at AMG where he was in charge of the latest power units. While previous VR6 engines were naturally aspirated, the new one will adopt forced induction and could result in to a twin-turbo system.
Volkswagen had previewed this engine back in May at the meeting where they displayed the Design Vision GTI concept powered by a twin-turbo V6 3.0 liter engine featuring a narrow angle design. The motor is capable of generating output of 503 HP (370 kW) and 413 lb-ft (560 Nm) of torque between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm.
But talking about the production engine, it is expected to be less heavily tuned and with a smaller liter output, with the output estimated to be between 340 HP (250 kW) and 450 HP (331 kW). It may sound a little less exciting but nevertheless we can always expect some surprises to happen at later stages.
