2010 Paris Auto Show Preview: The new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS

by Alex

The 2010 Paris Auto Show would witness the debut of the Carrera GTS which is a new entry from Porsche that they are adding to their 911 line up of supercars.

By way of ranking, Porsche places this GTS slightly above the 911 Carrera S and in line with this positioning have added some extra power to the GTS. The GTS comes with a flat six engine of 3.8 liter capacity that can produce 23 hp more than the 408 hp produced by the engine on the Carrera S. The peak torque of the GTS engine is same as that of the Carrera which is 310 lb feet, though the torque is obtained at 4200 rpm which is 200 rpm lower than the Carrera S.

The GTS utilities a special technology of special resonance intake manifold. In this technology six vacuum controlled tuning flaps are used which switch between power and torque optimized geometry. Instead of six the Carrera S has just one such tuning flap. There is also the sports exhaust system coupled with twin dual pipes that produces a unique sound. All this results in a superior performance graph for the GTS. The exhaust pipes come with their outer shells painted in black while the inner tubes are polished on the outside and nano coated.

For transmission the GTS comes with the standard fit of six-speed manual gearbox. There is also the optional seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK). The car is a rear wheel drive model. For acceleration the GTS shaves off 0.1 seconds from the 0 to 62 mph acceleration factor when compared to the Carrera statistics. The top speed of the GTS with manual transmission goes up by 2 mph compared to the Carrera and is placed at 190 mph. The 0 to 62 mph sprint time in case of the GTS Coupe with PDK and a Sport Chrono Package Plus in Sport Plus mode is 4.2 seconds.

By looks too the GTS differs a lot from the Carrera. The rear track is widened and the Carrera 4 models all come with all wheel drive. There are also the sports 19 inch glossy black alloys, a custom SportDesign body kit with black highlights and Carrera GTS logos on the doors and rear lid, in black or silver depending on the body color for the GTS.

For interior the GTS has a combination of standard black and the Black Alcantara for the driver and passenger seats. The steering wheel is also of a new SportDesign which is also covered by Alcantara.

Sales of the car is expected to start from December in the European market and then for the US market where it would commence shortly thereafter.
