2011 Audi A7: A Preview

by Alex

Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich was the venue where the 2011 Audi A7 was finally unveiled very recently. This after some quite embarrassing leaked reports and photos just before the event took place. The final outcome though was not as dramatic as the gossip had been about the car.

The style or looks of the car remains a matter for debate. The number of people admiring the looks balances out the number who has only criticism about the aspect. The bubble butt design has come in for heavy debate so to say. The car otherwise have the standard fit of LED headlights which are of course an option. There are the standard LED tail lights and the bi-xenon headlights.

The A7 has always been known for its focus towards power and efficiency. The car therefore would have a sporty driving behavior. The performance factor would sure rise further with the S7 and RS7.

The launch editions of the car would have two gasoline and two diesel engines making it four V6 type engines. This would be the configuration for the German market. There is yet some speculation on the configuration that would come out in the US market. It would be the 2.8 FSI and 2.8 liter naturally-aspirated V-6 engine at the base. The power generated would be 204 hp. For the gasoline engine it would be a 3.0 TFSI along with a supercharged V6. The power rating would be 300 hp and 324 pound-feet of torque. Acceleration characteristics would be 0 to 62 mph in 8.3 seconds for the 2.8 FSI engine and 0 to 62 mph in 5.6 seconds for the 3.0 TFSI engine model. The fuel efficiency factor reads as 29.4 US mpg and 28.7 US mpg for the 3.0 FSI and 2.8 FSI engines respectively.

It is the diesel version of the cars that would steal the show; however this would not be available at the US market. The cars would have either of the two 3.0 TDI engine fitted. One would provide for greater fuel economy while the other for more power. Such is the fuel economy version that one gets 44.38 US mpg with this model. The power delivered for this car would be 204 hp and the acceleration factor is 0 to 62 mph in 8.1 seconds which is lesser than the 2.8 FSI acceleration capabilities. The other diesel version that is 3.0 TDI makes 245 hp and 331 pound feet torque. The fuel economy in this case is 39.2 US mpg.

The cars would be available in options of front and all wheel drives. The front wheel drive models would have the standard multitronic automatic, and the Quattro units system installed with it routing power through a seven-speed S tronic automatic. A crown gear center differential and torque vectoring is the distinctive feature of the Quattro system in the A7.

Audi has extensively used aluminum for cutting down weight and a reduction of 20 percent has indeed been achieved compared to a similar sized car made of steel. This not only improves efficiency but even helps in handling and contributed towards enhancing performance statistics of the car. Hood, roof, fenders and the roof all have been made of aluminum. The steering mechanism of the car is electro mechanical, a first of its kind thing to feature in any Audi.

To minimize unsprung weight, the control arms of the suspension too have been made of light alloy while the suspension itself is made of aluminum. This also helps to coordinate with the 18 to 20 inch wheels that the car rolls on and also the standard “select dynamics” adjustable suspension of the car. For giving a more comfortable driving experience there is the optional adaptive air suspension system as well.

Coming to the technical aspects, Audi has an MMI infotainment system, but there is now the touchpad input interface for this system. The car also has a HUD system as well as the Bose standard sound system along with WLAN hotspot functionality. The Bang & Olufsen upgrade available has been made available for the Bose sound system. Also included are the Google services, and Bluetooth connectivity as well as an optional ambient light system. The interior is indeed packed technologically. Describing the interior quality of the car, Audi prefers to use the phrase, “crafstman’s level.”

Something as important as safety has not been left to chance in a car that steeps in technology. The car incorporates Audi’s pre-sense collision prediction system and this helps to reduce the effect of a crash. There is also the active lane assist system which helps in maintaining the car lane even if the driver my be having something else on his mind. For ease of parking there is the park assist system while the navigation system of the car has been coupled to the headlights, transmission of which there are both the automatic and manual options along with automatic stop start functionality so as to achieve optimum fuel utilization.

All this with the 2011 Audi A7 is going to be available for sale in the US market later this year.
