2012 S7 Sportback Revealed: Official Specs

by Sebastian Bivin

Audi has revealed its new S6, S7 Sportback and S8 sports saloons ahead of the public debut at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show in next month.

The 2012 S7 Sportback uses the same engine as the new 2012 S6 and S6 Avant, the new 4.0 TFSI with 420hp and 550Nm of maximum torque. The twin-turbo V8 accelerates the five-door coupe from 0 to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds, and top speed is limited to 250km/h. The V8, which uses the German manufacturer’s “cylinder on demand” technology under part load, consumes on average an estimated 9.7 liters of fuel per 100 km (equal to 24.3mpg US).

The power is transferred to the ground through a seven-speed S tronic dual clutch transmission and Audi’s quattro permanent all-wheel drive system with a self-locking center differential and torque vectoring. In addition comes an optional sport differential that distributes the power in variable proportions between the rear wheels.

This model features an adaptive air suspension sport and the Audi drive select dynamics system, while braking is provided by large, internally ventilated disc brakes front and rear. You can also opt for the carbon fiber-ceramic discs.

The main aim of this car is to become an example of efficiency attributed to the lightweight body, so the manufacturer decided to use a hybrid aluminum construction, which weighs roughly 15 percent less than a comparable all-steel body.

For 2012, the exterior changes include bespoke front grille and bumper designs, side sills, a different rear bumper that houses a diffuser and quad tail pipes plus 19-inch or optionally, 20-inch wheels.

As for the interior, the new model comes with sport seats dressed in combination of Pearl Nappa leather and Alcantara (a full leather treatment is optional), a three spoke steering wheel and unique decorative trim.

The German car maker said first deliveries of the S7 Sportback are scheduled to begin in spring of 2012. Pricing is not yet available at this stage, but stay tuned for details.
