Honda Recalls 1.2 Million Accords Due To Flaming Batteries

Honda is going to recall 1.2 million Accords, not for blowing up Takata air bags, but over batteries that are at danger of igniting.

The vehicles affected are Accord midsize sedans from the 2013-2016 model years. The concern comes from sensors on the battery’s negative terminal not being appropriately sealed from moisture. If road salt gets in there, it can rust and cause a short. This produces heat and a possible fire, which could be a security threat.

Honda is reporting four occurrences of engine fires because of exposed battery sensors, none which has resulted in any injuries or deaths. All four fires took place in states that use road salt throughout the winter.

As per the routine, owners will be informed and dealers will change faulty sensors without any charges. Sensors that show no indications of deterioration will still get an adhesive sealant and will be changed as soon as parts become available.
