Mercedes-AMG GT Sedan To Begin Production in 2018

A Mercedes-AMG GT sedan has been verified to start production in mid-2018. We had seen a concept of this four-door, four-seat sport sedan at the Detroit Auto Show in January, and finally we have some information of what we can expect from the production model.

For starters, the name of the vehicle is still a working title. Mercedes-AMG chief Tobias Moers verified that this hot sedan will be based upon the E-Class platform. AMG decided against using the AMG GT platform for a sedan since the rear transaxle would compromise excessive leg space in the back seat, which would kind of defeat the purpose of the vehicle being a sedan.

Moers also confirmed that no less than one engine will be available in the AMG GT sedan. The standard engine will be the AMG 4.0-liter V-8 biturbo engine observed in the AMG E63. In the E63, this engine makes 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque.

Along with this thrilling engine, a hybrid drivetrain will be offered eventually. The hybrid drivetrain will be the one provided at the Geneva Auto Show earlier this year which adds a 600 kW electric motor to the V-8 and also includes a four-wheel drive. We do not have any specifications on that drivetrain yet, but it guarantees to include much more excitement to a presently potent engine.

The AMG GT sedan will take on the Porsche Panamera and the Audi RS7. Seems like there are lots of high-performance, premium fastback sport sedans.
