Ford, PSA led European vehicle sales dropped in September

French automaker PSA Group and U.S. rival Ford led a 2 percent drop in European car sales previous month, according to industry data released on Tuesday.

September registrations dropped to combined 1.466 million cars in the European Union and European Free Trade Area (EFTA), the Brussels-based Association of European carmakers stated.

Combined sales of PSA brands dropped over 5 percent, with Peugeot, DS and Opel/Vauxhall all recording year-on-year drops. Paris-based PSA acquired Opel previously this year and started reporting registrations for the German brand in August.

Ford sales fell 13 percent to 93,288 cars, where as EU market leader Volkswagen saw its registrations slip 1.1 percent, weighed down by the VW brand’s 3.2 percent decline.

Asian automakers fared better last month, with Toyota’s sales up 1.9 percent and Nissan recording a 3.3 percent gain. Hyundai increased 2.1 percent as affiliate Kia leapt 6.5 percent.
