German automaker BMW stated on Friday it would recall 11,700 cars to repair their engine management software after it found that the wrong programming had been set up on its high-end 5- and 7-Series models.
“In the course of internal tests, the BMW Group has found that a properly developed software update was erroneously assigned to certain inappropriate model-versions,” the company stated.
“The BMW Group notified the relevant authorities immediately.”
BMW provided the declaration after a report in news weekly Der Spiegel suggested it had installed software that manipulated emissions of hazardous gases such as nitrogen oxide, something its management has constantly rejected.
