Investigators assume that a car with eight family members inside was traveling at least twice the speed limit on West Third Street before it struck into a tree, killing four and injuring four others on Christmas Day, according to Dayton police.

The names of the four people killed in the accident are:

  • Renee D. Jones-Blevins, 49
  • Quaishia M. D. Jones, 28
  • Tae’Kwaun Jones, 10
  • Mae’Iah Jones, 5

The four others injured in the crash Wednesday morning are all currently in critical condition at area hospitals, Dayton police Lt. James Mullins stated during a media availability Thursday afternoon.

All occupants in the car are assumed to be members of the single family, however, police were not really sure if they were immediate family members or extended, Mullins stated.

The two adults in the car, the driver identified as 49-year-old Renee D. Jones-Blevins, and 28-year-old Quaishia M. D. Jones were declared dead at the scene. The other two victims killed in the crash were identified as 5-year-old Mae’Iah Jones and 10-year-old Tae’Kwaun Jones, Mullins stated.

The ages of the four others injured in the crash were estimated from 12-years-old to 1-year-old.

The crash took place on Wednesday near the intersection of West Third Street and Brooklyn Avenue at 11 a.m. The impact of the crash resulted in the split of the car into two parts and catch fire.

The marked speed limit on the stretch of West Third Street where the crash took place is 35 mph.

Police stated the car in the accident was a Dodge Avenger, which was designed to carry up to only five people inside, Mullins stated.

Police continue to encourage witnesses of the accident to get in touch with the officers with information to help their investigation.
