Next Mitsubishi Lancer EVO goes diesel hybrid

by Ron Grant

Mitsubishi decided to do a major overhaul of the Lancer Evolution model by changing the next incarnation into a diesel hybrid. While it will preserve Mitsubishi’s mid-range shove trademark, the new model is built as an answer to tough economic condition and emissions regs.

Several sources said that Mitsubishi gave serious thought to drop the Evo model altogether. A month ago, sources in Japan declared that their plans to move the car to a petrol hybrid powertrain and base it on the PX-MiEV SUV concept’s platform was dropped. Despite this, Mitsubishi’s R&D department was given approval to design the car as a diesel hybrid.

While reducing the CO2 emissions to less than 200g/km, engineers expect the Evo XI to get to 62 mph in under 5 seconds. Handling will be entrusted to a revised version of the Evo’s highly rated four-wheel drive system, S-AWC, which integrates steering, braking and traction control.

Mitsubishi might have a problem with the Japan and US markets where diesels are not yet popular.
