Four people were killed after a wrong-way crash on Interstate 85 in Kannapolis.

The crash involved six vehicles and it took place around 7 p.m. Tuesday on I-85 South, just south of Lane Street when a 2006 Nissan with three occupants was driving north on I-85 South when it struck a 2021 Hyundai head-on.

That crash started a chain reaction that involved four other automobiles, all of which were driving south.

There were multiple patients flown to hospitals.

Nissan’s driver, identified as Jack Lee Hudson, 78, from China Grove, and Nissan’s passenger Debbie Sue Gulledge, 41, from Waynesboro were pronounced dead at the scene.

While another Nissan’s passenger identified as Margie Kindley Hudson, 77, from China Grove succumbed to injuries at the hospital. Hyundai’s driver Robert Dion Wilson, 44, from Magnolia, also succumbed to injuries at the hospital.

No details about the passengers in the four other cars were provided.

All southbound lanes of the interstate near the Old Beatty Ford Road exit were shut. They were resumed before 1 a.m. on Wednesday.

The crash is under investigation by North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
