Just barely three weeks after launching the 2011 CL-Class, Mercedes-Benz is releasing another two cars for the AMG genre – the CL63 and CL65 AMG. More aggressive looks, better handling and much more power along with a higher spread of equipment installed are the distinctive features of these models.
Smaller, But More Powerful
The CL63 is the the smaller of the two but comes with an more advanced engine in the form of the Mercedes AMG’s new 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine. This one delivers 536 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque with standard configuration. If the AMG performance upgrade kit is added then the power generation figures goes up to 563 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. The displacement has been downsized from the previous 6.2 liter but the power has been stepped up. The car accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and this is helped with the standard three-mode AMG SpeedShift MCT for transmission. The top speed of the car is 155 mph in standard trim. Details of the upgraded AMG kit are not yet known.
The exhaust is a dual twin AMG sport exhaust system with chrome tailpipes. It’s an AMG tuned suspension system all through. The front sports an anti lift system and the rear gets both anti drive and anti squat systems. For better behavior under sports conditions AMG has tuned the Active Body Control system.
The wheels are twenty inch in dia, and are wrapped in 255/35 for the front pair and 275/35 high-performance tires for the rear. The brakes are made up of huge two-piece internally vented which are cross-drilled 15.4-inch units with dual sliding calipers for the front and 1-inch smaller with single sliding calipers for the rear brakes. That’s a lot of stopping power for the big car.
Equipment fitted inside are COMAND infotainment system, sporting a 40-gigabyte harddrive and GPS navigation, Bluetooth handsfree calling, voice control for audio, telephone and nav. There is also a range of high-spec electronics including an 11-speaker Harman/Kardon LOGIC7 surround-sound system with SD reader and six-disc DVD/CD changer. For décor the car has AMG premium leather, performance steering wheel and aluminum shift paddles, Racetimer-equipped instrument cluster. The front seats are 14-way power heated and active ventilated with lumbar support.
The car comes with two options which are Driver Assistance and AMG Performance. In the Driver Assistance package you get the Distronic Plus with Pre-Safe brake, Active Blind Spot Assist, and Active Lane Keeping assist. In case of the AMG performance package we get removal of the top-speed limiter, bringing it up to match its bigger brother at 186 mph, boosts power and torque by 27 horsepower and 74 pound-feet respectively, and adds a carbon fiber engine cover.
CL65 AMG
On the other side we have the CL65 with its 6.0 liter V12 engine. Its slightly older technology that the engine incorporates but makes up for it with its sheer size and comes with a pair of turbochargers that makes for a higher power output of a thumping 621 hp at 4,800 rpm and 738 pound-feet of torque that is on tap from as low as 2,000 to 4,000 rpm. The acceleration figures stand at 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds flat. This is not much to boast about and the reason for that is the rear tire which cannot take speeds more than this. The power of this car is actually evident when already in motion and passing at moderate speeds. There is the AMG Performance package also to the CL63 AMG but that would help to close the gap to quite an extent. 186 mph is otherwise the top speeds of the CL65 with the V12.
The transmission system is a five speed gearbox with AMG SpeedShift incorporated. There are the three modes of operation though that is Sport, Comfort, and Manual options.
Wheels, tires, suspension, and brakes as well as steering system are the same as the CL63 AMG. The outer design differs in the badging and twin chrome tailpipes’ which have a ‘V-12 design’ to it.
There is no upgrade packages in case of the CL65 AMG for it comes with the standard fit as it is. Certain stand alone options though are available like Splitview dual-content screen, carbon fiber trim, and a range of paint and upholstery options.
Both variants are expected to be with the dealers by this November.
