Mercedes-Benz gets patent of the futuristic Smart Roadster design

by Alex

The 2011 edition of the Geneva Motor Show saw ‘Smart’ presenting an amazing concept car model without any doors, without a roof and without any windscreen. Now this was surely tipped to be the car of the future, with the way it was designed. They decided to call it the Crossblade. The concept based on Fortwo Cabrio was finally turned to reality with Smart. The concept was developed into a limited edition model which sold 2,000 units of the car.

With the kind of response Smart received for the design they have got something big under their belt. Mercedes Benz has asked Smart to develop version 2.0 of the Crossblade for them. That’s what you call hitting the jackpot with a single car. Mercedes Benz will trademark the design of this two seater roadster model.

The original Crossblade was a model designed barring doors. It used steel safety bars at about height of the passenger’s shoulders. The bars used gas-operated struts to swing the bars upwards. But unlike the original model, the one showed in the picture is all set to have conventional door patterns as in any other car. The car will also have a larger version of a wind deflector that will be surrounding the driver and passenger. The car will also have the trademark of Smart, their Tridion Safety Cell which though has been redesigned to form separate safety bars.

The patent filing by the company only sheds light on the designs of the car and nothing else as per the submissions on November 16, 2010. We suspect there’s some kind of previous study we may not be aware of but the car mentioned here is a brand new concept model all set for a release in the Detroit show in January or Geneva in the month of March. This may also be the production version of the next model for the Smart Fortwo Series.

But that’s not a roadster, it’s a new crossblade. The roadster is something else entirely.
