The DTM i.e. Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters event scheduled to start from the 2012 season will play host to six M3 race cars, as announced by BMW’s Motorsport division. The representation of the Bavarian company in the league of highly ready for action championship rests upon three teams, each with the allowance of entering two cars. The chosen teams are long term partners BMW Team Schnitzer and BMW Team RBM, in addition to the newcomer Reinhold Motorsport GmbH.

The past few months witnessed the speedy development of the M3 DTM car in Munich. The initial track tests are programmed to start this month. “The concepts presented by BMW Team RBM, BMW Team Schnitzer and Reinhold Motorsport GmbH ultimately convinced us. This is an excellent team line up for BMW. For us, it is important that all three teams have absolute equal rights. We are looking forward to cooperating over the coming years – and hope to enjoy great success together,” were the words quoted by the BMW Motorsport boss Mario Theissen.

The BMW driving line up for the DTM has not yet been announced and no words leaked regarding this matter. Out of the three participating teams, it is only Schnitzer that was a part of BMW’s DTM participation in the 80’s and early 90’s, grabbing the winner’s title in 1989.

The official involvement of BMW happened in the period between 1987 and 1992. Eric van de Poele drove the M3 E30 in 1987 to win the prestigious title whereas; Roberto Ravaglia raged the road in a M3 E30 in 1989 to hit the jackpot. Prior to that, private team Gubin won the inaugural 1984 DTM season with Volker Strycek behind the wheel of a 635CSi.
