The Upcoming Modern Day Version of 550 Spyder Officially Confirmed

Now it’s official! An entry-level version of the classic 550 Spyder will hit the Porsche production line, as confirmed by Matthias Mueller, the car manufacturer boss.

Matthias Mueller, Porsche executive, has confirmed to German newspaper Handelsblatt that the company from Stuttgart will build a ‘modern-day’ version of the classic 550 Spyder as an entry-level model. The executive said:

“I can imagine that such a modern version of the famous ‘James Dean’ Porsche would be well-received by our customers. The new model will not be retro-styled. “

This new model could probably benefit from the four-cylinder boxer engine, the same as its older “brother”, which will be sized at 2.5 liters and, turbocharged, will be producing around 360 BHP.

Also known as “the Baby-Boxter,” the new Porsche model is expected to be mid-engined and could share the same platform as the proposed Audi R4 roadster. The design of the future model will not be retro-styled, according to Mueller.

The outgoing head of R&D Wolfgang Durheimer said at the Detroit show last January: “We have a four-cylinder boxer engine under development.” He admitted that the unit “can be applied” to the Boxster and Cayman.

Durheimer said the unit “could be applied if necessary to the 911. Our decision is, on the 911 side, we’ll stay with the flat [six]. But there are opportunities for the future.”

The new model is expected to cost around € 55,000, with a release date unknown for now.
